PSORIASIS

Psoriasis is an inflammatory disorder which affects the skin, scalp and nails. It is thought to be due to an underlying immune problem and can be associated with auto-immune arthritis. The disease responds to immune suppressants, supporting immune dysfunction as a cause. Psoriasis presents as defined red areas covered by white scales. Nails show abnormal growth ranging from small areas of pitting or ridging, to crumbling of the nail and separation from the base. Psoriasis may occur as an acute problem, especially in children, commonly following a respiratory tract infection. Acute onset psoriasis can be very severe and require admission to a hospital.

There is very little role for acupuncture in the treatment of acute and severe psoriasis, however it is usually helpful in keeping chronic mild to moderate psoriasis controlled. A reduction in skin irritation occurs initially with acupuncture. This is followed by a decrease in redness, with a reduction in scaling occurring later.
