CHRONIC COUGH

Chronic cough is cough that is persistent for over two months. It is important to ensure that there is no sinister underlying problem and a good history and physical examination, with appropriate screening tests, is important prior to treatment. Common non-sinister causes include underlying low grade asthma, post-nasal drip from nasal allergy, chronic bronchitis, stomach acid reflux (oesophagitis) and post-infection airway irritability. Treatment involves the management of any underlying problem. Acupuncture is very helpful for alleviating symptoms.
