ABNORMAL BLEEDING

Abnormal Bleeding in women may be due to underlying pathology. These range from growths and inflammation in pelvic organs to hormonal imbalance as well as pregnancy. Anaemia and low iron levels give some indication of the severity of the problem. It is important to determine the underlying problem in management of this problem.
In approximately 20% of women no cause for abnormal bleeding can be found. Treatment options range from the use of anti-inflammatory medications, to hormones and even anti-clotting drugs (rarely).

Outcomes of medical management are generally not exceptional. Surgical options include curetting of the uterus (also used for diagnosis) and ablating the lining of the womb using more modern techniques. Removal of the womb (hysterectomy) may be needed for persistent bleeding associated with anaemia.
Acupuncture provides a non-invasive method of managing mild to moderate bleeding and is a useful option to consider before surgery.
