DURATION AND FREQUENCY OF TREATMENT

Duration of treatment This is based on a “when necessary” basis. Treatment is continued while symptoms are improving, and is stopped when symptoms subside. Chronic problems e.g. osteoarthritis, may however require ongoing treatment for symptom control.

Frequency of treatment The time interval between sessions depends on the time of onset of the illness, and on the severity of symptoms. Sports injuries and acute onset illness usually requires fewer sessions of treatment, but at shorter treatment intervals e.g. daily or every second day. Chronic problems e.g. migraines and menstrual-related illnesses, require less frequent treatment but over a longer period of time.

Most presenting problems are treated initially at bi-weekly or weekly intervals. The time between sessions is progressively lengthened as the severity of symptoms decreases. Most practitioners monitor responses closely and are guided by the nature of the illness and by the individual’s rate of recovery.
